Why Some Students With Low Grades Make it To Prime Universities

It’s puzzling how some students make it to prime universities, while your application on the other hand, gets rejected. You wonder even more, especially when you know (modesty aside) that academically speaking, you are better than that person. That can only be attributed to one explanation: Universities are not all after the intellectually-gifted applicants.

Figures don’t impress that much. You got a perfect score on your SAT and ACT. You also graduated with honors. Still, those accomplishments are not enough for your application to be approved by panelists. There are still other components that matter aside from the figures that prove you are indeed smart. Admission essays, recommendation letters and extracurricular involvement also count. Universities, nowadays, do not only want students that can answer complex mathematical problems manually. They want those who recognize their passions and are working hard to pursue them. They want those that care not only about themselves, but also the community they are in.

Panelists don’t rank applicants. With the thousand applications they have to review, admission officials no longer have the time to group students according to GPAs and SAT scores. And even if they have ample time, still, they would not do so. They look into your grades for a minute or so, sometimes even only for a few seconds, to see whether you can keep up with the classes, and that you would not fail. And that’s it. After officials have seen your grades, then again you are on the same playing field as the rest of other applicants. In short, the admission process is not about the university arranging applicants according to grades, picking the top ten percent and then discarding those at the bottom of the list.

Character appeals more. Universities desire to admit students that would make their community more diverse. They want aspiring leaders, innovators, national athletes and motivational speakers. Do not just invest on your grades. Join organizations whose purpose you support. And do not move from one to another every year. This is not about the quantity. Show rather the developments you have made from being a member of the group, to being voted as among the officials. Also, join outreach activities during summer so you can beef up your application.

Do not feel jealous, If that is your friend who got accepted, then you should be happy more than anything else. Instead of fostering grudge, it is best that you work on your other applications, and work on compensating for what you may be lacking. This is for your benefit especially if you are waitlisted and are looking forward to be given another chance by a university of your choice.

Choosing to Study Abroad

Most students know someone who’s gone oversees to study abroad but most have never considered the option for themselves. There are many advantages to spending a semester in another country, but is this right for you or your child? First and foremost, what is study abroad? The basic premise is to travel to another country and continue normal studies while also learning about the country’s culture, history and language. Students who study abroad must normally have a certain amount of school credit hours to qualify for the opportunity; must be willing to be gone for either a semester, summer or year; and must typically pay their own way unless they’re on scholarship. Before deciding to take this journey, both students and parents are interested in hearing the advantages of this option. So what are they?

One major benefit in most people’s minds is the opportunity to experience a different culture for a short period of time. The student will have the chance to become accustomed to new foods, arts, music, history, political systems and holidays. Another plus is if you decide to travel to a country whose national language you’ve studied, you’ll be able to gain first-hand experience putting that language to use. The best way to become fluent in a language is to put it into practice; what better way to do that than to rehearse it in its natural environment? Having this kind of practice with a foreign language can look very good to a perspective college, grad school and even to future jobs.

The ultimate way to ensure you’re choosing the right plan is to be absolutely comfortable with the overall idea. If you don’t like leaving home for a couple of days, odds are high that adjusting to studying abroad would take some time. It’s critical to weigh your options. Obviously it’s natural to fear becoming homesick, but most students who’ve chosen to study abroad find that they’re so busy participating in amazing new opportunities that the time flies by and home is a faraway thought.

If you’ve weighed your options and decided the journey will benefit you, be sure to check out your options as far as programs go. Most high schools and colleges offer their own programs, but if you choose to go another route or if you’re home schooled then you’ll want to do plenty of Internet research. Terra Education is one option for those wishing to participate in a high school study abroad program. Regardless of which choice you go with, remember that you’re experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and you should take full advantage of it. Put yourself out there and gain as much as you can from from the experience. Safe travels!

Student Loan Crises

We have a student loan crisis here in the United States. Student loan debt in aggregate, an unsustainable bubble of government inspired debt mania, has sky rocketed over the last 10 years nearly 400 percent. The total student loan debt is now nearing 1 trillion dollars with over 10% of that in default or delinquency and much of the rest teetering on collapse.

The government makes these loans available to all manner of students attending a wide variety of schools. Many of these loans are extended to students paying exorbitant tuition rates to traditional non-profit schools rewired and then transformed into “paper mills” or to a whole new category of for profit schools many with even more exorbitant tuition rates and seemingly in indirect proportion to the value received.

Students pay excessively high tuition rates for watered down curricula at a plethora of institutions offering degrees that don’t meet the smell test when compared to the value associated historically with the attainment of a 4-year degree. Many students even after graduation struggle to properly read, write, or do arithmetic as would be expected of a fully educated graduate of a traditional university.

Many profit and non-profit educational institutions are drinking at the government loan spout while at the same time “dummying down” the path to a degree. Government money is fueling the demand and the corresponding tuition inflation is creating a student loan bubble of catastrophic proportions. Many employers no longer value these degrees unless they are from certain very high-level schools; the kind of schools that even student loans from the government can’t cover.

Indentured servitude is a good metaphor for what is happening with the student loan fiasco; this is a truly abusive system that takes advantage of those with high hopes and trying to improve their lives. At least an indentured servant, historically, could learn a craft or a trade that was with them for life; what are these folks getting but membership in a new class of debtor?

With the passage of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 student loan debt public or private is no longer dischargeable in bankruptcy court. Many of our younger citizens now carry their student loan debt around with them like the proverbial, “ball and chain” looking for a job from employers many of whom no longer value the degree. What is next? Will they bring back a “debtors prison”?

Our once very fine university system has been severely damaged by this phenomenon. Not all loans are bad and not all schools are “paper mills” but the trend is clear and this will end badly unless this system is rehabilitated.

Teaching In Thailand – Becoming An English Teacher In A Foreign Country

Schools in Thailand are always looking for good English teachers that are qualified to teach young children, high school students or adults. Children and adults living in Thailand may be interested in learning how to read, write and speak English to advance their education or career, or simply for fun. Native English teachers who are interested in teaching in Thailand can take courses that will prepare them to teach children or adults the English language.

In order to get a job as a teacher in Thailand a person needs to have a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree. They must be a qualified teacher in their own country and have a TEFL qualification. People who have a professional appearance and experience teaching at a school in Thailand have a better chance of landing a good teaching contract. The vast majority of foreign English teachers in Thailand are male, so females who apply for a teaching job in the country have a good chance of being hired.

Thai students are much different than European or North American students. They are highly respectful of their teachers but their cultural learning atmosphere is much more relaxed than in most other countries. For example, it is normal for a student to show up a half an hour late for class and there are no repercussions for such behavior. English teachers must learn to adapt to the cultural differences and continue doing the best teaching job possible. Although some students may not take their English studies seriously, other students may need to learn English so they can continue their education in an English speaking country.

Some teachers are interested in providing the best education possible, but others are more concerned with spending time in Thailand. Teachers that want to fund an extended vacation in this vibrant location should look for part-time teaching work. Full-time Thai English teachers are often required to work six days per week and do not receive many days off.

Although the pay is not high, many teachers have enjoyed teaching children and adults in Thailand. They have the chance to experience a new culture and meet plenty of new people while staying in the foreign country. Teaching students in another country gives teachers a chance to gain valuable work experience that they can add to their resume.

Native English teachers who are teaching in Thailand are expected to be an active member of the school, attending the early morning flag raising ceremony each day and any of the school’s special events. It is important for teachers to learn about the culture so that they can do what is expected of them. Many teachers assume that they need to be fluent in the Thai language in order to become an English teacher in Thailand. Although people should make an effort to learn some of the Thai language, they do not have to be fluent in the language before teaching there.

Too Many Universities All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go

The Coalition Government which has placed so much emphasis on reversing the trend towards dumbing down in education must be extremely dismayed by one side-effect of tuition fees in higher education rising to as much as 9,000 a year. It appears that the drop in university course applications which has followed the fee rise has prompted many institutions to lower their entry requirements in order to keep their numbers up. This is especially true of newer universities and former polytechnics.

According to the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS), the number of English applicants to all universities has fallen by 10 % compared with last year. The biggest casualty was the University for the Creative Arts which suffered a massive 29.2% drop from 2011. At the top end of the spectrum, Oxbridge applications were virtually unchanged.

In what looks like a desperate last minute attempt to keep student numbers and revenues up, many institutions have lowered A level grade requirements which basically means that young people are being let in even though they may not have what it takes to ultimately gain a degree. Either that or the quality of degrees would have to fall. This is almost certainly not what the government intended when it moved the goalposts on fees.

Take, for example, the situation at Leeds Metropolitan University where the Telegraph reports entry levels on 97 degree courses, including architecture, law, English literature and history, have been cut to 80 points on the UCAS tariff – the equivalent of only two grade Es, the lowest possible pass. The inevitable result is that the average quality of undergraduates at such universities is destined to decline.

Of course, in the past, such establishments would have responded to such developments by focusing more of their education marketing spend on attracting students from overseas but, here again they have been stymied by the governments tightening up on visa requirements for students from outside of the EU.

That just leaves the EU as a potential source of students to compensate for the shortfall in domestic numbers. This may also prove a problem bearing in mind the economic malaise in the Eurozone and the fact that fees in many EU countries like Belgium are actually lower than in the UK.

Nobody it seems has asked the most relevant question which is what is the optimal number of university places in the UK in the first place. It would appear that the quality of graduates, especially in the disciplines which are in such high demand such as technology and engineering, is now taking centre stage in the debate rather than the total quantity of new undergraduates studying at our universities.

Tips for Youth Bible Study

Too many young people think that Bible study is boring and that they have plenty of time to learn and follow the word of God once they are an adult. This is not true, and a lie that Satan uses to stop young people from knowing and loving God. Bible study is exciting because learning and following the word of God. A person is never too young to understand the word of the Lord and apply its message to their life.

Young people can find many rewards from the Bible. God has promised many rewards to those who find him through His words and prayer. He has promised Strength (Isaiah 40:29-31), Peace (Psalm 119:165), Joy (Psalm 16:11), Success (Joshua 1:8), Stability (Psalm 16:8-9), Answered prayer (John 15:7), Personal testimony (Acts 4:13).

They should observe Gods word and see the message in the passage. Then they should then interpret the meaning of the text as it applies to their life and finally apply the message to themselves by asking what the passage wants them to do.

When you observe the passage ask who is in the story, who is writing and who is being written to. Look for what is being communicated, the cause, affects and meaning in the words. Put yourself in the passage and think about your reactions to what is being said and what the words mean to you.

In order to interpret the Bibles message ask why the writer said the words, why they are significant, and what is important about the words. Finding the importance of the words as they are written will help you to find the importance of the words in your own life.

To figure out how a passage can be applied a student Bible study group should focus on taking the message and working it in to their actions at home, at school, and everywhere else. They should think about the changes they should make or actions they should take to embrace the message.

The goal of teen and youth group Bible study should be to develop a love and understanding of Gods word. He messages of His word will help young people to navigate the confusing world of today with lessons that will teach them how to love and revere God. Young people can show their love of God by following John 5:3 and joyfully obeying his commands.

How To Design Science Activities For Middle School Students

Science activities can be very effective learning tools if they are properly designed. A properly design science activity will engage students, it will entertain them and it will introduce a science concept in an interesting way. Science activities that are not properly designed will be boring and basically a waste of class time. Below are four tips that will help you to design an effective and fun science activity for your middle school students.

Tip #1 Make the Activity Active

The best way to make a science activity more interesting and fun for students is to make it active. Active science activities are going to get students moving and interacting with science tools and concepts. A good example of an active science activity is having the students go outside and to collect data on plant and animal species on the school ground. On the flipside, an inactive science activity is having the student complete a worksheet. As you can see the first activity is going to be more fun for the student because it gives them something novel to do.

Tip #2 Make the Activity Interesting

One problem that science teachers have is making science interesting to their middle school students. This age group has all ready developed a set of interests and anything outside that set of interests is basically ignored or thought to be boring or uninteresting. In order for teachers to develop an interesting science activity they will need to find a way to connect the science concept with something that the students are interested in. For example, if the activity is about electronics concepts then the teacher can incorporate remote control vehicles or robots in their activity.

Tip #3 Make the Activity Relevant

Another way to get kids engaged in a science activity is to design is so that it is relevant to them. This is a good idea as it helps to show kids that what they are learning about does impact them and their lives. Teachers can link science concepts to what is happening in the world today by using news stories and products in their introduction of the science activity.

Tip #4 Make the Activity Quick

Middle school students still have a relatively short attention span, particularly when they are faced with a science activity. Teachers need to make sure that the science activities that they plan do not exhaust students or last longer than the activity can keep their attention. The timing of a science activity generally will be 50 to 75 percent of a single class period for middle school students. Longer activities will need to be a lot of fun or very interesting.
